Established in Dec. 1981, the China Society for Overseas Chinese History is an academic organization. Its original name was Overseas Chinese Historic Society. In July 1986, it was renamed the China Society for Overseas Chinese History. The aim of the organization is to communicate extensively with scholars on Overseas Chinese around the world and all others who are interested in Overseas Chinese affairs, actively carry out academic research and exchange activities, and to promote understanding of the history and the present situation of Overseas Chinese. The first honorary president (1981) was Liao Cheng Zhi, the president was Zhuang Xi Quan. The second honorary president (1986) was Ye Fei, Zhang Guo Ji, the president was Hong Si Si. The third honorary president (1991) was Zhuang Yan Lin, the president was Zhang Chu Kun. The fourth honorary president (1996) is Yang Tai Fang, Zhuang Yan Lin, the president is Zhang Chu Kun. The secretariat is in the China Institute for Ethnic Chinese History. There are currently around 300 members, most of whom are returned Overseas Chinese, scholars and workers on Overseas Chinese affairs. They are a fundamental resource on Overseas Chinese research in Mainland China, and their achievements reflect the research level of Overseas Chinese affairs in Mainland China. Since its establishment the China Society for Overseas Chinese History has developed very good cooperative relationships with colleges and institutes, which are engaged in Overseas Chinese Studies. We worked with Zhong San University, San Tou University, Xia Men University and Ji Nan University several times to hold international Overseas Chinese Conferences and other special topic Conferences. We also have built relatively extensive academic relationships with scholars and experts on Overseas Chinese affairs from the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Our members also went to America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong to participate in Conferences related to Overseas Chinese. The journal of the China Society for Overseas Chinese History named Overseas Chinese History Association Newsletter was started in 1982. In 1986, the title was changed to Overseas Chinese History, and in 1988, was replaced again by Ethnic Chinese Historic Research (in cooperation with the China Institute for Ethnic Chinese History) and became Overseas Chinese specialized academic periodical (quarterly). Every issue has about 100,000 words. The Society also edited and published Ethnic Chinese History Materials (From 1988 to 1989, 8 issues total 600,000 words), Clippings of Newspapers and Magazines on Ethnic Chinese, which started publication was monthly in 1989, has been bimonthly and its title was renamed Ethnic Chinese Materials in 1999. Every issue is about 100,000 words. The Society edited and published the following reference books Ethnic Chinese Books and Periodicals Catalogue, Ethnic Chinese Studies Index, Dictionary of the World's Ethnic Chinese, and the Encyclopaedia of Ethnic Chinese. Reference materials include the Collection of Overseas Chinese Investments in China in Modern History, Africa Overseas Chinese Historic Collection, Collection of Overseas Chinese Resistance to the Japanese and Save the Country History. Theses collections include Ethnic Chinese Historic Research, The Change of Overseas Chinese in Postwar Period International Conference Paper Collection, Overseas Chinese at the Turn of the Centuries, and the Overseas Chinese Economic Perspective. Monographs include the American Overseas Chinese History, Southeast Asian Chinese History, Overseas Chinese Economic Research, and Overseas Chinese Policies of Chinese Feudal Governments, etc. Along with national institutions, the China Institute for Ethnic Chinese History also established local societies for Overseas Chinese History in Guang Dong, Fu Jian, etc hometowns of Overseas Chinese. There are currently 27 local societies for Overseas Chinese (see chart). Members include experts, scholars, and workers on Overseas Chinese affairs. They have been based in local regions and have been engaged in investigation of Overseas Chinese's hometowns.
