The Association of Chinese Professors of Social Sciences in the United States (ACPSS), a Texas registered, non-profit, non-political professional organization, was founded in June 1995 by Chinese professors and researchers of social sciences and humanities residing in North America. It aims at (1) protecting the rights and interests of Chinese scholars of social sciences and humanities who currently hold teaching and research positions in the United States and Canada; (2) promoting creative interdisciplinary research cooperation among social scientists; (3) pursuing scholarly exchanges among Chinese academics in North America, mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong; (4) advancing the comprehensive development of social sciences in mainland China; (5) supporting China's reform and opening to the world. ACPSS members come from a variety of disciplines and specialties in social sciences and humanities, including political science, economics, business management, sociology, philosophy, law, history, religion, education, communication, anthropology, archeology, literature, arts, musicology, psychology, geography, linguistics, library science, public administration, women's studies, and other commonly recognized social sciences and humanities fields. Since its founding, the ACPSS has held several conferences and workshops, independently as well as in cooperation with other organizations, and published numerous books, mostly on China-related issues. A 20-book American Studies Series, to be published by the Chinese Social Sciences Publishing House, is well underway. The ACPSS also organized a 14-member visit delegation to Taiwan in 1998. In addition, ACPSS members have been very active in promoting China's cause, such as giving suggestions and recommendations to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on China's development and related issues, speaking up in the American press about its coverage of China, and making donations to save the national treasures in San Xia. At present the ACPSS has about 300 members and an advisory committee consisting of internationally recognized scholars. Most of the ACPSS members grew up in China and have maintained extensive and close connections in China socially and professionally. Having received systematic and rigorous graduate training in North American universities, they are rapidly gaining professional recognition in their respective fields, and having increasingly greater influence on promoting scholarly exchanges between China and the West and providing useful recommendations to policy-makers.
